Overcoming the Fear of Death: Through Each of the Four Main Belief Systems
Kelvin Chin, Juris Doctorate, Masters Degree, Executive Director, Overcoming the Fear of Death Foundation
This presentation will focus on the four main beliefs that underlie all religious and cultural beliefs about death. The objective is to not only help each participant reduce their own level of fear about death through the lens of each of the four beliefs, but also to expand their knowledge base about how to address other people's fears, especially those who may not share the same religious or cultural beliefs as the participant.
What are the four underlying beliefs worldwide and how can understanding those beliefs help the future of medicine by improving the medical practitioner's ability to understand and communicate more effectively with their patient, thus improving the delivery of healthcare? What is death? Is it the end, the beginning, or a transition? Why are we so afraid of death? After all, death is inevitable.
This talk will help us reduce and overcome our fears without changing our beliefs about death, religion, or God or no God. It will give medical practitioners skills, languaging and understanding of how to address their patient's fears in a non-religious, non-psychotherapeutic manner.
THIS TALK IS FOR: • The Devout, the Agnostic, and the Atheist • The religious believer in Heaven/the Afterlife, and the non-believer
IN THIS TALK, YOU WILL LEARN: • The Four Main Belief Systems About Death that cover all religions and cultures • How to overcome your fear of death through your own belief system • How to reduce your fear if you have the “Fear of Continued Existence” • How to talk with other people — patients, friends, family — about their beliefs on death that may be different from yours • How to help your patients reduce their fears about death and dying.
