2026 Conference on Medicine and Religion

Bearing Witness: Art, Memory, and the Moral Imagination in Medicine
Visit the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Holocaust Museum Houston

This excursion invites conference participants into a guided, reflective encounter with art and memory as alternative lenses on the conference theme. Through a curated visit to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, participants will engage photographic works that wrestle with prophetic voice, collective suffering, praise and lament, and the role of creative expression in times of moral strain. A subsequent visit to Holocaust Museum Houston will deepen these reflections by attending to questions of testimony, witness, and responsibility in the face of trauma and institutional failure. Together, these experiences create space to consider how clinicians, scholars, and chaplains might speak truthfully, imaginatively, and compassionately amid burnout, bureaucracy, and polarization, and how art, ritual, music, and story can restore dimensions of moral and spiritual life that data and policy alone cannot reach.
