Immune Modulation in Uro-Cancer: Bridging the Gap between Miracle Healing and Evidence Based Medicine

Liaqat Ali, MBBS, FCPS (Urology), Associate Professor Urology, Institute of Kidney Diseases Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar, Pakistan

Immune modulation has been a recognized modality of treatment in different cancers including superficial bladder cancer. There has been tremendous research on developing immune modulators like Interferon and BCG in management of Uro-cancers. The Miracle healing is commonly witnessed and observed phenomena across the globe irrespective of religiosity. The miracle healing is said to be due to divine intervention secondary to prayers, healer touch, pilgrimage, mediation, but how it happens bears a big question mark? We believe in supplication of Prophet Abraham “And when I am ill, it is [God] who cures me.” (Ash-Shu`ara, 26:80). We believe that Physician is only a bridge between God and the patients. But this belief does not address the queries of evidence base medicine. This divine intervention in form of miracle healing should have foot mark on cell physiology.

In a quest of finding the missing link of miracle healing and evidence base medicine, we found Melatonin secreted by pineal gland the seat of soul. It plays an immune modulatory role, exerts anticancer activity through several biological mechanisms including stimulation of anticancer immunity in form of increased circulatory CD8, CD4 cells. Our present study is an effort to produce scientific evidence of enhanced immunity in spiritually motivated patients of superficial bladder cancer.
